Ok! You have sent out the character packets to your guests weeks in advance, your event location is prepared, and you are waiting for your guests to arrive. But how will the party unfold?
Usually, the mystery lasts from 2-4 hours; however, the game can be shortened or lengthened depending upon your needs. The catalyst for the murder is the entertainment; this is the mechanism that tips off the murderer that it’s a good time to strike. So, if you want to shorten the mystery simply have this happen sooner that the “typical timeline” below. If you want the game to run longer, delay the entertainment portion.
Arrival and Mingling (1 hour)
Guests arrive in character; they introduce themselves, enjoy the host’s tasty snacks, and start bribing, exploiting, and hustling each other. Some guests will have specific tasks they need to complete in a clandestine manner.
Entertainment (20-30 minutes)
Guests are gathered into one locale to watch a few talented guests perform (such as a magician act or lounge singer). That is, some characters are actually performers! Have fun watching friends or co-workers ham it up. In some scenarios, the host will make a short speech or formally acknowledge the reason for the celebration.
Murder (0-30 minutes)
After the entertainment, the murderer will strike! Sometimes he/she is quick and sometimes the murderer has carefully plan his/her attack. The body will be discovered, screaming will ensue and dessert might be delayed.
Investigate and Solve the Crime (30-60 minutes)
An investigator will arrive at the party (the victim will change costume and re-enter in this new role); this person will lead the guests in an effort to solve the mystery. The investigator may have clues for the guests, but mostly, it will be up to the guests to talk it over and decide whom among them is a murderer! After guests have offered their own theories, the solution will be read aloud for all to hear.
